Designed for use by students who will be abroad for six weeks or longer, the Long-Stay version of You’re Not In Kansas Anymore is a unique new suite of online tools that enhances every student’s experience abroad by expanding his or her intercultural outlook. Created in collaboration with leading study abroad experts, this comprehensive program empowers students to integrate studying abroad with their academic, personal, and professional lives. It empowers you—the professional—with unprecedented involvement in your students’ study abroad experiences.

How it works. And why.

Our Long-Stay study abroad enhancement program engages students intellecutally, emotionally and socially. The video-based pre-travel program, plus post-travel assessments, along with an optional interactive in-country component, will help students get the most from their study abroad academically, personally and professionally.

Our long-stay study abroad enhancement program engages students on three levels.

Intellectual.

Students benefit from extensive discussions on cultural differences and adaptation, health and safety information, integration techniques and much more.

Emotional.

Abstract ideas take powerful form through true, peer-relayed study abroad testimonials. Portrayals of realistic scenarios show students ways to think differently about studying abroad.

Social.

Actors raise and resolve the same questions held by many students viewing the program. Students learn from peers how to take ownership of their study abroad experience.

And delivers in three crucial ways.

Authoritative content.

Our study abroad enhancement program features peer-led discussions and scenarios built upon the latest and most relevant contemporary research.

Authenticity.

Students view our programs as real, not academic. Their connection to the material can help them achieve a richer, deeper and more life-altering study abroad experience.

Quantitative success.

Pre-travel, in-country, and post-travel testing and feedback will gauge understanding and progress down to the student level.

Privacy, safety and security policies of the Student Success: Study Abroad program

Student Success cares passionately about student privacy and safety and the security of our program and the data it generates. To those ends, here are the safeguards and policies we’ve put in place

1) All student data is strictly confidential, meaning at no time is student identification attached to student answers on demographic or program-specific questions. The only information attached to student identification is whether/when they completed different portions of the program and their pre and post-test scores. Students are notified of confidentiality on the initial program set-up page and through the Privacy Statement, which they are required to acknowledge that they have read on the second full page of the program.

Privacy Statement

Student Success values the privacy of the users of our program in all regards, and will do all we can to assure you of strict confidentiality. To that end, administrators will not see the answers you give to any questions anywhere in this program connected to any information identifying you personally, but will only see whether you completed the program and your overall pre-test and post-test scores. Your participation is completely confidential, meaning your name and e-mail address will never be given out or used in any fashion other than to contact you with follow up information on [program specific] education/prevention.

2) While any requirement for students to complete the program is determined by the individual school using the program, students always have a right to opt out of the use of their specific program question data for research by their school and/or Student Success. This is explained in the Consent for Research statement, which they must agree to or decline on the second page of the program. If students opt out, the only information collected on them is their identification information, whether/when they completed different portions of the program, and their pre and post-test scores.

Consent for Research

Student Success uses student responses, including demographic information, for research purposes in an effort to reduce [program specific issue] on college campuses and to improve the effectiveness of the Student Success programming. In accordance with the Privacy Statement, Student Success may use my program data for research purposes provided that my name and any identifying information is kept strictly confidential, meaning that such information will never appear in any internal or external Student Success materials. I understand that there is no penalty for declining to participate in the research and that I may still complete the program.

3) All demographic questions, except for sex, provide students with a “Prefer Not to Answer” option. Sex is required as some programming is sex specific and thus the information is necessary to provide students with the proper programming.

4) The Student Success school liaison/administrator has electronic access to a Progress Report, which provides student identification information, whether/when that student has completed different portions of the program, and student pre and post-test scores. They also have electronic access to a Full Data Report that contains demographic and content-specific answers for all students who consented to research without any student identification information attached. In order to avoid any possibility of linking Progress Report student identification with the specific data, the Full Data Report is only accessible when at least 100 women and 100 men have completed the program and the data order is randomized every hour.

Safety

1) The Resources button, which is available at all times during the program, takes a student to a customizable list of campus and local resources provided by individual schools. In addition, the Sexual Assault Prevention program includes the following link at which students can find the nearest rape crisis centers by zip code, or can call 1-800-656-HOPE to speak with a rape crisis counselor at any time of the day or night.

2) In the Sexual Assault Prevention program, Students are informed at the outset of the video portion of the program as to the potentially triggering nature of some content and how to avoid it.

Warning: This program contains material that may "trigger" a reaction from sexual assault survivors. Before that material occurs, a white square will appear in the lower left corner. If you find this material difficult, please turn down the sound on your computer until the square disappears. We apologize for any discomfort this material causes. And we hope you understand the necessity of including true-to-life material in a program like this one.

Security

1) Data security is assured through our contractual obligation to participating schools as outlined in our Agreement, which states:

"Student Success and User agree that Student Success reserves the right to utilize information about User generated as a result of the performance of this Agreement for academic research purposes, in connection with which research Student Success agrees to preserve the anonymity of anyone who obtains access to the Software through facilities provided by User."

In other words, beyond the school liaison who administers the program, we are contractually obligated to maintain the anonymity of any students who take our program.

2) The data we gather from your students is protected by our IT partners at Savvior Technologies in the following ways:

Physical Security

The server on which all data is stored is located in a disaster-proof facility called “aspStation,” which their website describes as "an 18,000 square-foot building…designed by IBM and built in 1990 as a secure data center for a local hospital. This modern facility is complete with a built-in full-time UPS, stand-by generator, 3,700 square feet of raised flooring, and a Halon fire suppression system."

The facility requires security key card access to the building, as well as a combination lock to access the rack the Student Success server is stored in. You can learn more here: http://www.aspstation.net/.

Virtual Security

Transmission between the user's machine and the server is done securely, using the web's most recent standard SSL encryption level, currently 128bit. Servers are updated regularly with the latest security updates for respective operating systems.

Server Administrators Security

Savvior Server Administrators are under contract with Student Success to protect and keep private our data. No client data is accessed by Savvior unless Student Success would specify.

We hope this compilation of information helps you better understand our commitment to student privacy and safety as well as the security of all data generated by our program. Should you have any questions, please contact us at 877-349-1150 or info@studentsuccess.org.
